Negative Calorie Foods
Exactly what are negative calorie foods? Do they really exist?
To answer the question, first let us consider what this really means. To begin with there
is no such thing as a negative calorie. A calorie is a measurement of a unit of heat and
cannot be negative. The term negative calorie food simply means a food whose caloric
level is less than the energy necessary to eat and digest it.
When we drink a glass of cold water, which has no calories at all, the body must expend
energy to process and bring it up to blood temperature. Each time we drink a glass of
cold water we burn a small amount of calories.
Let’s take foods for example, celery does not give us the amount of calories necessary
to cover the energy it takes to digest it plus the energy we expend just to keep alive and
breathing. Therefore it is considered a negative calorie food.
Obviously if a person were to live on a negative calorie diet they would suffer from
severe nutritional deficiencies and starvation would occur. Their muscle mass would
eventually waste away.
The best way to apply a negative calorie diet is to counteract eating an over rich diet or
as a form of fasting or detoxification. It can be a great way to clean out your system
assuming that you are otherwise healthy. In any case it is best to seek medical advice
first.
When using negative calorie foods for detoxification please consider the following:
1. Do not eat large quantities of the same food. If consumed to excess some foods will
cause damage to your system. Acidic foods such a lemons and grapefruit can damage
the lining of your stomach. Other foods may cause diarrhea and can also put an
excessive burden on the liver. Mix and match your negative calorie foods in small
quantities.
2. Obviously overeating any food will leave you bloated and feeling sick. Just because
the food is considered negative calorie is no reason to stuff yourself. Plan smaller
portions and eat more often.
3. If you eat slowly and chew you food thoroughly you will feel more satisfied and use
more calories. Some foods will be more effective when consumed raw rather than
cooking. Try chopping or grating foods like carrots and beats.
4. When fasting or during detoxification you may develop symptoms such as
headaches, tiredness and irritability. If the symptoms persist or become severe, cease
the program and see a physician.
5. Finally when your fasting or detoxification is over don’t binge on normal foods, return
slowly.
